IN A NEW YORK BLIZZARD

So…
I had to go and see West Side Story on Broadway…
Because it’s my all time favorite musical/movie…
And I never got to see it the first time in 1957…
Or the revival in 1980.
So with the last performance being January 2nd
I couldn’t miss my chance again.
But of course I waited till just a few weeks ago…
To buy tickets to see it.
Sunday the 26th, sitting in the Detroit airport waiting for our flight…
My friend asked, “A blizzard is going to hit. Don’t you think we should rebook?”
“Can’t,” I said. I’m not going to miss West Side Story again.”
And so we flew in just five hours before the snow hit.
And boy, did it hit!
I’ve never felt such whipping snow…
With 60mph winds!
Monday the 27th, two feet of snow on the ground…
“We should have rebooked. This is ridiculous! What if they
cancel the show?” my friend asked.
“I told you, I’m not going to miss West Side Story.
And besides, this is New York City. Nothing shuts down.
Except for a few trains. Trust me. The show will go on.”
And go on it did.
And so did we…
Schlepping over mountains of snow at ever street corner…
And leaping over slush puddles at every turn.
But no matter what the weather…
It was worth it to be back in NYC…
To see West Side Story
Even if it was during the worst storm in 60 years.

Always, Em-Musing

First off, Happy New Year. Second, yeah, New York was totally dumped on. My sister and most of my friends from college live in the area.

West Side Story... enough said.

Oh how I'd love to visit New York. Maybe one day, preferably without the snow... though christmas time would be magical.

Good for you for toughing it out. Manhattan generally doesn't close down...even in the worst of storms. It can even be a great time to be there, because the city is quieter since no one is travelling in from outlying areas. How was the musical, anyway?
