And so it happened…
With a five hour layover in a lousy airport...
I bought into the hype…
Fifteen dollars and change worth of hype…
Couldn’t help it…
My curiosity got the better of me.
After hours of sitting and reading…
After hours of sitting and reading…
All my back issues of Writer’s Digest and RWA..
I had to get up and move.
And so I strolled…
Looking for a bar…
(of the protein kind)
And a new mag…
(of the architectural kind)
And there it was—a book...
Of the Fifty Shades of Grey kind...
So I picked it up.
What was I looking for?
The sex?
Oh yeah!
But also the first page…
Did it grab me? Engage me? Beg me to read more?
It did.
Is the writing exceptional?
I will make no judgments against another author…
Especially one that’s published. And successful.
But this I will say—I’m still reading it...
Because I like the story…
And I like reading about the kind of sex I don't have...
(nor want to).
But tell me. Does wanting a cheap thrill from a book…
But tell me. Does wanting a cheap thrill from a book…
Makes me a hussy of a reader?
And tell me…
Have you read it? If not, will you?
Or?
Are there books that give you a cheap thrill?
Are there books that give you a cheap thrill?
Always, Em-Musing

I don't plan to read it because I've read a few excerpts and I think the writing would drive me insane. However, I don't begrudge the author her success, nor do I look down on anyone who reads or enjoys any book. Books are entertainment, among other things, and it's so limiting for us to think about them only as high art. They can be as much a carnival ride as a movie or ... a carnival ride. Nothing wrong with escapist entertainment, I say.
Plenty of my friends have read it and loved it.
I probably won't read it. I still have The Hunger Games on my TBR list!
Not my style of read. But since many of us read to escape, if it's escape for you, then enjoy!
The first page did not grab me personally, so I won't read it, but I know lots of people who've read and love the entire series. It hasn't gotten this big for no reason.
If you're a hussy, then what does that say about the millions of women reading the book right now?
In the end, it's just entertainment. Not for everybody, but still. Enjoy it!
The reading experience is so varied and compelling when spread over the world's population; that's what makes the question "what makes a best seller?" impossible to answer. And rightly so.
Don't think I want to go there.
So you're not an ereader?
Em, I've received the book. Read parts of it. I personally couldn't get into it and I'll admit I'm not a big erotica reader. Is she a good author? *shrugs She has a style that's different. Perfect, no. Technically correct? Definitely not and I refer you back to her style.
Dan Brown isn't technically perfect either, just sayin'
Sia McKye OVER COFFEE
Most of my co-workers read it and asked me if I knew her or knew of her. LOL. I think they think all writers must know each other.
I am laughing at "hussy of a reader." Gonna have to use that one! I like Julie Garwood books...I don't read near as much as I should.
