WHERE THE WILD THINGS DIE

Legs of lizard…
Heads of birds…
Dragonfly wings…
Frog bodies incurred
Concoction for a spell?
No…
Body parts I see daily…
In my house...
Thanks to my cat, Indie.
Of course I knew when I moved into the jungle…
There’d be animals and critters galore..
But silly me for thinking they would all be outside.
And speaking of outside…
No more letting my cat wander around at night.
A mother jaguar and two cubs have been spotted…
And…
DUN, DUN, DUUUUN….
At the last sighting…
The mommy jaguar had the neighbor’s dog in its mouth.
But the good news?
Humans are not on a juguar’s menu.
And for the next animal story…
The other night...
I woke up with a start...
To the pungent stench of a skunk...
The stink was so strong…
I wasn't sure if the dark mass lying next to me...
Was my cat, Indie or the damn skunk.
The good news?
My cat didn’t stink…
So the skunk had sprayed another predator…
Maybe the juguar?
But wait....
That would mean that the jaguar...
Was right outside my window!
EEEEKKKK!!!!
So tell me…
How wild is the life where you live?

NO ESCAPE

I had been scolding my cat, Indie..
For terrorizing and killing so many frogs lately…
And then…
THIS!
Sorry froggie!
I didn't mean to kill you!
When I closed the window…
I didn’t see you there.
And the poor thing…
He was probably escaping from my cat…
And hiding out on the window ledge.
Bad homeowner!
Well…
That’s it for today…
Got to study Spanish for my morning class today.
So?
Ever kill an animal by accident?
(if you killed one on purpose, I don't want to know)
Adios.
Hasta manana.

A WET SITUATION

Ya know what I love about humidity?
There are no expectations.
Down here in the tropics…
Humidity is a constant…
And no one here expects you to look perfect.
Like hair.
As any woman knows…
Humidity is not a woman's best friend.
So now I just let humidity arrange my do...
Or just pony tail it up.
And make up? What make-up?
Humidity = sweating = every trace of make-up...
Slides off a face...
So I've since let my face go au naturale.
And speaking of au naturale…
It’s my preferred sleeping mode now…
Who needs sweat-causing fabric...
In the middle of the night?
In the daytime...
I’ve also learned to be as undressed as possible…
While still being fully clothed.
I used the think the chicas down here…
Were being provocative in how they dressed…
Now I know better...
It's called survival…
Wear as little fabric as possible…
To expose as much skin to the air as you can.
It’s all good though…
Today…
When I opened up the sliders…
The early morning air was cool and fresh…
The palm trees were bowing heavy...
From the evening’s tropical downpour...
And that's when I heard...
The call of the motmot…

That elusive exotic bird that makes it’s nest in cenotes…
And cenotes if you don't know...
Are deep natural aquafers...
Caused by limestone erosion...
Which in turn cause freshwater cave systems...
With most of them vast enough...
To swim or dive in.

mexico cave cenote yucatan swim water stalactite

So while the cenotes on my property...
Are not yet open, there are caves...
And deep down...
There is a vast water system that goes on for miles.
And here where I live in the Mexican Caribbean...
Is one the only places on earth where there are cenotes.
So?
Have you ever been to a cenote?
Or would you like to swim in one?

FILLED TO THE BRIM

There is nothing that satiates a writer’s soul…
(at least mine)
Like the company of other writers.
On my travels back to the States…
I met with seven of my writer buds…
Two actually took time off work to be with me…
THAT’s what you call friend.
We met early one morning at Panera’s…
Breakfast extended into lunch.
When I left…
My muse was energized.
Of course we’ve always stayed in touch via electronics…
But it’s not the same as being there…
Present…
In the now…
Yeah…
I love being in the company…
Of those who fill more than my cup of coffee.
What about you?
Who can you be ‘now’ with?
Who renews your writing soul?

WILL IT BE WRITTEN?

Hi...
I'm back from the States...
I had a GREAT time with family and friends.
While I was there...
I was involved with a situation:
Scenario :   Movie theatre
Characters: 5 movie goers I will call MG’s
MG 1:  I was disappointed. It didn’t stick to the book.
MG 2:  I think they combined lots of books in the series.
MG 3:  I liked the effects, but I hated Clarisse.
MG 4:  It was scary and I liked my slushie.
MG 5:  The first movie was definitely better.
MG 1:   I wonder when the next movie will come out.
MG 3:  I wonder if they’re going to do a Red Pyramid
          series
MG 2:  And OMG! Percy is sooooo cute!
MG 5:  I think the Cyclops was cute.
After he got his two eyes, that is.
MG 4:  I want another slushie.
Hahahahaha!
I confess...
I was eavesdropping on...
Two ten-year-olds…
Two nine-year-olds…
And a four-year-old…
As they critiqued the same movie I had just seen.
Who were these movie going/movie reviewer kids?
My four grandkids and one of their friends.
And what were they were reviewing?
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
It tickled me to hear them discuss elements of the movie.
But what I loved more?
The fact that they read…
And that they’ve read all of the Percy Jackson books.
These children have renewed my faith…
That reading books in print will never die.
So?
Do you think print books will ever die?
Or what percentage will be print vs electronic?

OPEN DOOR POLICY

You know how people always say…
“When one door closes, another one opens”
Well, I’ve had a door close on me recently…
And I’ve been waiting for another door to open…
But I wonder…
When that proverbial door finally appears…
Which way will the door swing?
I guess I’ve always pictured the new door…
Swinging inwards towards me…
As if some unseen force…
Is doing the opening…
And I play no part in this new destiny of mine…
And all I have to do is walk through.
But what if the opens outwards?
And in order for it to be opened…
I first have to knock…
And then I wonder…
Who will answer?
And what’s beyond the door?
I guess first…
I need to be on the lookout for a new door…
And then make the choice…
To open the door…
And go through.
Or close it and look for another…
Or stay static.
So?
Have you ever had a new door come to you?
How did you recognize it?
And did you go through?

On another note...
I will be traveling back to the States...
For some much needed family time...
So I'll catch up with y'all in a week or two.

Always, Em-Musing
