STIMULATERS

This post is part of the monthly blog hop/therapy session known as the
Insecure Writers Support Group, founded by the one and only, Alex J. Cavanaugh

October 2 optional question:

It's been said that the benefits of becoming a writer who does not read is that all your ideas are new and original. Everything you do is an extension of yourself, instead of a mixture of you and another author. On the other hand, how can you expect other people to want your writing, if you don't enjoy reading? What are your thoughts?

Hmm?
A thoughtful question indeed.
I'm thinking that one would have to live in a bubble, on an isolated island, be in a coma, or deep space...
To not be influenced some way or somehow by:
TV, radio, Internet, social media, books, and other printed stuff.
While you don't need to read a book to come up with ideas...
Reading books can hone style, technique, pacing, voice, etc.
I think Stephen Kings says it best:
"If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There's no way around these two things that I'm aware of, no shortcut."
And really?
Why would anyone, let alone a writer...
Deny themselves the pleasure of reading?
Again, Stephen King says it best:
"Books are a uniquely portable magic."
Here's my latest portable magic.

So?
What magic are you reading now?

Always,
Em-Musing

I'm afraid my present choice is a 'how to' book - Social Media for Authors: Book Marketing for Writers Who'd Rather Write
by Jennifer Lovett Herbranson. I'm finding it very helpful.

Yes, why would we deny ourselves?

Hi,

Stephen King is being quoted a lot this month in blog posts about reading and writing.
I think I'll purchase his book and read it because I definitely agree with him.

Have a wonderful October.

Second time I've seen that quote today, probably won't be a last either. Readings is a great teacher, couldn't start writing without it. :)

I'm reading a couple writing reference books right now, lol. I'm dying for some fiction but when I have spare time I've been trying to spend it writing lately.

There are people who do not like to read! (big gasp) I still read a lot of short fiction.
