September 4 question - Since it's back to school time, let's talk English class. What's a writing rule you learned in school that messed you up as a writer?

English was my favorite subject in school... 

I loved writing flowery poems ...

Using many adjectives and adverbs...

And my grades were good...

The only reprimand I got from teachers...

Was my punctuation.

(do poems need punctuation?)

So, I was shocked when I started writing in the 'real' world

And learned that using adjectives and adverbs...

Is just telling a story and not showing it.

Adjectives and adverbs also slow down a story. 

Obviously, (sorry) King and Twain agree:

“The road to hell is paved with adverbs.” – Stephen King 

 “Adverbs are the tool of the lazy writer.” “If you see an adverb, kill it.”  – Mark Twain

Actually, (sorry) I'm sure you all know...

It's the overuse of adjectives and adverbs that need to die. 

My writing is better now for the most part... 

And for the "unmost” part...

My blog posts are where I can write freely (sorry) 

Whatever and however my little heart desires (a cliché)

And just for grins and giggles (yup, another cliché) 

Here’re some stats of two famous authors regarding adverbs:

 

Hemingway used only 80 adverbs in every 10,000 words while J.K. Rowling used 140 per 10,000.  And King said this: “Ms. Rowling seems to have never met one [adverbs] she didn't like”.

 

I’m pretty sure (sorry) Rowling and her bank accounts really (sorry) don’t care about her overuse of adverbs.

July 6 question - If you could live in any book world, which one would you choose?

 

 

Hmm? 

Interesting question...

Not sure if it’s asking which genre world?

Or a particular book’s world?

If it’s genre...

Then definitely not Horror or Thrillers... 

My adrenals go into overdrive...

Just watching horror or thrillers on TV or the movies...

It'd be exhausting running away from danger all the time. 

Definitely not Historical...

I love modern conveniences...

Like medicine, safe drinking water, flushing toilets, & easy clothing,

Not Science Fiction or Fantasy...

I don’t want to figure out how to live in a new world...

With alien lifeforms or mythical creatures...

But time travel and magical spells would be fun.

So... 

I’d definitely live in a Romantic Comedy world... 

I love romance and I love to laugh...

And there’s always a happy ending...

It’s a win/win/win kinda world.

But... 

If it’s a book’s world... 

Then the book I choose is the Bible...

And the world is Paradise... 

I believe I’m going there anyway...

But couldn’t hurt to be sure I got there, would it?

IWSG Day Question: How do you celebrate when you achieve a writing goal / finish a story?

How do I celebrate?  

Hmm? Let me slurp the ways...

Kahlua & cream. Ahhh! 

Cool and delicious! 

Or a nice glass of red wine with cheeze. Mmmm!

Or an ice cold beer with maybe pizza. Yum!

But wait!

CALORIE KIBOSH!

Before I can even reach for the Kahlua bottle...

My mind is calculating... 

How many calories in the Kahlua? 

And the cream? Yeesh! 

Then I calculate the wine with cheeze... 

Just as many calories...

Plus wine makes me sleepy...

And I don't want to be cheezy sleepy...

I want to celebrate.

So next it's beer...

Dos Equis amber to be exact... 

But I like to eat something when I drink a beer...

Like pizza... 

But I can ever eat just one slice...

So, how many frickin calories would that be?

FORGET ABOUT IT

Too many calories and carbs!

So what in the hell can I slurp to celebrate?

Wait...

I can smell it now...

Rich, hot, steamy and black...

COFFEE!

Coffee always beckons me in the a.m. to rise and write...

And when my eyeballs are bleary and red from writing...

Coffee gives me that just needed pick-me-up.

Ahhh!

Well, there you have it...

Guess I'm not that exciting of a celebrator...
