PULP FICTION late 1800s – mid 1950s
I’ve enjoyed posting with my Pulp Fiction
theme, but I have to note, most of the covers are with half-clad women, breasts almost
exposed, and many have the women in violent situations. This is all before TV.
The
movies at that time were sensitive not to have too much sex or violence, but
the pulps had no such boundaries. Why do you think readers were attracted to violence? And especially against women? And do you think readers today are?

I suspect there is something cathartic in violence--it gives us an outlet for our dark urges. However, in a lot of the pulp fiction violence against women it had a lot more to do with sex. You never see unattractive, old, or sensibly dressed women in those pictures.

Scary, sexist covers but they probably sold a lot of copies! LOL I can't read anything that imposes rape or violence against a woman but I'm a big baby.
at some level we are still in the stone age. each male wants to dominate as many females as he can, if you can't you take vicarious satisfaction

Wow! Those covers are quite troubling! The near-nakedness doesn't bother me, but the violence does. But I suppose these are pretty old-fashioned. People can get their sex and violence on-line. It's really interesting, though. Thanks for sharing.
I don't mind the women but the implied violence in the images is troubling. I wonder if some of this was done with the intention to shock, to make people look. Still, there are better ways to make people look.
